The Malian Minister of Energy and Water, Mr. Habib Ouane, was in Paris to attend the ministerial meeting on the “Paris-Nairobi Climate Initiative” for clean energy.
During his visit, on Friday, April 22, 2011, the Minister wished to meet with officials of the Fondation Chirac concerning most notably issues relating to the Niger River.
The Fondation is preparing the “African Solidarity for water in the countries of Niger River Basin” forum, integrated in the regional process of the World Water Forum, which will be held in March 2012 in Marseille.
This forum will:
– assess efforts since the Paris Declaration, initiated by President Jacques Chirac in 2004.
– mobilize governments and heads of State of the Niger Basin Authority and accompany them through the process of ratifying the UN Convention on International Watercourses (1997).
The challenge is twofold: to allow people access to reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy in order to encourage their economic and social development, all the while minimizing the impact on climate change.
