The increasing scarceness of timber resources primarily affects women: every day, they must travel ever greater distances to retrieve firewood. This assessment led them to launch this project. Moreover, population explosion and the lack of alternative energy threaten forests.
Foumban women decided to work with town officials on three axes:
1. reforestation of degraded lands
After a consultation process, land unfit for agriculture was selected by local figures. Nurseries and plantations are being created by the villagers.
2. promoting the use of wood saving technologies: home improvement
This type of hearth reduces by half wood consumption and CO2 emissions. It requires training blacksmiths to build them and educating women on their use (95% of women use traditional stoves).
3. transferring skills to the communities
Thanks to a development plan, plantations will sustainably produce timber energy to these densely populated municipalities, and will generate additional benefits.
Foumban, one of the country’s cultural and traditional centers with 113,000 inhabitants, is home to the Mélap Forest Reserve. However it lacks the technical expertise to manage these woodlands. Therefore, the project also aims:
– to transfer the land ownership of plantations to the municipality,
– to support the creation of a forestry unit in the town, which in time will be responsible for managing the plantations and the Forest Reserve.
By fighting deforestation, the Foumban project also allows those involved to fight against poverty (by creating a cycle of local development) and to change practices that destroy the environment (through the implementation of sustainable management of wood resources).
Because the ONF International relies on women and the local population and is helping to establish a more mindful forest management system, the Fondation Chirac welcomes and encourages their initiative.
