Famine in the Horn of Africa is once again at the heart of current affairs.
Unfortunately for the hungry, the same questions persist: What are the remedies? How can this tragic situation be resolved?
My feelings are divided. On the one hand, there is an alarmist and pessimistic revolt; on the other hand, the hope for the mobilization of all countries alongside humanitarian organizations.
For the past 10 years, a plan has been established to reduce or eradicate hunger in a sustainable manner in this region of Africa. To do so requires turning promises into reality, starting with raising funds to provide for food needs. Then, implementing agricultural policies (irrigation, livestock, stocks,…); but also making every effort to ensure political stability and stop armed conflict.
The best moment to take action is now, despite the thousands who have died in the meanwhile.
A glimmer of hope emerged today: the G20 (80% of the global economy) mobilized at the initiative of the French Chair. The issue of agriculture and world food was listed for the first time on this body’s agenda.
The G20’s credibility and trust will be judged initially in November at the Plenary Session of Heads of State and Government, and then again on the tangible efforts and results in the field.
The FAO (in coordination with UN bodies) and the G20 are starting hands-on endeavors with the July and August meetings in Rome of all member countries to establish priority actions and ensure the mobilization of all (food aid, emergency action, farming, stocks…)
The global economy is not brilliant but it is precisely in these situations that the true expression of solidarity must be voiced. In the balance is the future, the lives of thousands or even millions of human beings.
We are all concerned. The future of the planet depends on global food balance.
We must innovate in terms of sources of funding so as not to depend on economic fluctuations. We must also emphasize media mobilization to raise everyone’s awareness, because the worst possible thing would be to forget, to render mundane, to lose interest.
Eradicating hunger in the Horn of Africa or other regions of the world is possible.YES, if WE WANT to.
