December 1st, World AIDS Day
The goal is to fight against the three pandemics that decimate six million people a year – HIV / AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis – by providing patients in developing countries better access to treatments.
In a joint report, the WHO, UNICEF, and UNAIDS have tracked progress in the fight against HIV / AIDS over the past 10 years.
This positive momentum is highlighted today, the global day against the disease. Efforts have resulted in better access to treatment, which in turn has helped reduce the number of deaths; in improved access to screening that has allowed 61% of pregnant women in east and southern Africa to benefit from testing and counseling, compared to only 14% in 2005.
The downside however, according to the UN, is the decline in funding dedicated to the fight.
