After rescuing 25 children from a massacre during the tragic conflicts between Hutu and Tutsi in Burundi in 1993, Marguerite Barankitse has taken in thousands of war orphans regardless of their origins. All children, Hutu, Tutsi, and Twa, are welcome in her “Maison Shalom”, an NGO she founded to provide access to healthcare, education, and culture.
Nicknamed “the woman with 10 000 children,” she has made it possible to raise together children, whose origins and culture opposed, children who have been weakened and traumatized by civil wars and ethnic conflicts. She is a woman of faith, of courage, and of hope. Maggy has created a place that celebrates reconciliation with life.
