International mobilization against the traffic of falsified medicines

A law against falsified medicines under consideration in Congo-Brazzaville

The Head of the Republic of the Congo, Denis Sassou N’Guesso, alongside Dr. Thomas Boni Yayi, President of the Republic of Benin and Blaise Compaoré, President of the Republic of Burkina Faso were among the very first to sign the Cotonou Declaration on October 12, 2009. Dr Boniface Okouya, the president of the Intersyndicale des pharmaciens d’Afrique (ISYPHARMA – Inter-union of Pharmacists of Africa), has proposed a law against falsified medicines, which is under consideration by the Congo Republic, barely three months after the Cotonou Declaration.

On October 12, 2009, heads of state and government leaders, international organisations (African Union, the UN, and the European Union), and the Fondation Chirac met in Cotonou (Benin) to launch the “Cotonou Declaration” to raise awareness amongst emerging and industrialized countries concerning the growing threat posed by the traffic of falsified medicines.
