The Fondation Chirac Prize for Conflict Prevention
Those of good will must rally so that peace may prevail over factors of war.
Jacques Chirac
Fondation Chirac launch, June 9, 2008Peace efforts are awarded the Nobel Prize. However, efforts to establish dialogue at the root of conflict prevention are rarely, if at all rewarded at the international level. Nevertheless, many men, women and institutions work in one way or another, despite the risks, to prevent conflicts. Trying to prevent conflicts as suspicion and aggression escalate is oftentimes riskier than maintaining peace between two exhausted antagonists, who have oftentimes already measured the senselessness of the suffering they are mutually inflicting.
Conflict prevention is a low-profile endeavor due to a lack of academic definitions and to the absence of recognition by international organizations, despite the efforts of the Boutros Boutros Ghali to create a completely separate category of international action in his Agenda for Peace.
The Fondation Chirac Award for Conflict Prevention aims to improve awareness and support for those who dedicate a part of their lives and resources to preventing conflicts.
It will increase international recognition of these efforts, spark new callings, and offer financial means to chosen individuals to continue their work.
